The Joint Newsroom: Amplifying Sudan’s Voice in Times of War

Amidst the ongoing crisis in Sudan, and particularly with the outbreak of war that has resulted in a devastating humanitarian disaster, widespread famine, and grave human rights violations, the need for collaborative journalism has never been more critical. In response to this urgent need, the “Joint Newsroom” was established as a unified platform bringing together diverse media organizations under one umbrella. This initiative is dedicated to delivering objective and accurate news reporting, upholding the highest standards of journalistic ethics and professionalism, especially crucial in times of conflict.

The Sudanese Media Forum launched this vital initiative in April 2024, beginning with the establishment of the Joint Newsroom and a comprehensive media campaign aimed at supporting Sudan and mitigating the humanitarian crisis. Building on these efforts, the Forum launched a follow-up campaign in November of the same year titled “Silence Kills… The Situation in Sudan Cannot Bear Delay,” which remains active to this day.

The Joint Newsroom: Mission & Objectives

The Joint Newsroom is driven by a core set of objectives, including:

  • Ensuring Accuracy: The Newsroom is committed to gathering information from a wide range of sources and meticulously verifying its accuracy. This ensures that news content delivered to both local and international audiences is characterized by conciseness, clarity, and objectivity, free from any bias.
  • Combating Misinformation: In an era of rampant misinformation, the Newsroom actively counters false news, misleading narratives, and hate speech. It prioritizes the dissemination of verified information from trusted sources.
  • Fostering Peace: The Newsroom promotes constructive dialogue and cultivates a culture of peace, reconciliation, and peaceful coexistence among all segments of Sudanese society.
  • Protecting Press Freedom: The Newsroom champions freedom of the press and the right to access information. It empowers journalists to fulfill their professional duties without undue restrictions or pressure.

Newsroom Methodology

The Newsroom operates according to a robust system designed to guarantee the accuracy and credibility of information. This system encompasses:

  • Comprehensive Intake: The Newsroom receives a wide spectrum of news reports, including written, audio, and visual content, from its diverse member media organizations. It emphasizes adherence to the highest professional standards and journalistic ethics, particularly crucial in the context of conflict.
  • Rigorous Review: All incoming reports undergo meticulous review by a specialized editorial board, overseen by a coordinating editor-in-chief. This ensures that all content meets stringent quality and credibility standards and adheres to established editorial guidelines.
  • Strategic Dissemination: Once reports have been vetted and approved, they are strategically disseminated across the Newsroom’s network of media platforms. This includes radio, television, newspapers, websites, and social media channels, ensuring that information reaches the public effectively.

Media Campaigns

1. Stand With Sudan (#StandWithSudan)

Launched on April 7th, 2024, the “Stand With Sudan” campaign is a powerful call to action aimed at ending the devastating war in Sudan. The campaign strives to address the urgent humanitarian crisis, combat the looming threat of famine, and put an end to the egregious human rights violations taking place. Key goals include pressuring warring factions to allow the unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid and to establish safe corridors for the delivery of essential supplies to those in need across the country.

With its clear and impactful slogan, #StandWithSudan, the campaign continues to galvanize global attention and raise humanitarian awareness. It seeks to foster widespread regional and international solidarity, amplifying the voices of the Sudanese people and bringing their plight to the forefront of the global stage.

2. Silence Kills… No Time to Waste for Sudan

Launched on November 5th, 2024, the “Silence Kills” campaign builds upon the momentum of “Stand With Sudan.” This ongoing initiative focuses on mobilizing the international community to address the dire situation in Sudan. It aims to halt the persistent violence against civilians and ensure accountability for perpetrators of atrocities.

The “Silence Kills” campaign has a multi-pronged approach:

  • Raising Global Awareness: The campaign strives to keep the spotlight on the Sudanese crisis, preventing it from fading from international consciousness.
  • Pressuring for Peace: It exerts pressure on all parties involved in the conflict to cease hostilities, end violence against civilians, and protect vulnerable populations, particularly in besieged cities and active conflict zones.
  • Demanding Justice: The campaign advocates for justice and accountability, seeking to end impunity for those responsible for war crimes, crimes against humanity, ethnic cleansing, and other atrocities.
  • Facilitating Aid: It calls for the establishment of safe humanitarian corridors to ensure the swift and unimpeded delivery of aid to all those affected, without discrimination or preconditions.

Amplifying Voices: The campaign serves as a platform for the Sudanese people, amplifying their voices and sharing their stories of suffering and resilience amidst the ongoing crisis.
