The Sudanese Journalists Syndicate was established as an extension of an organizational movement that began in 1946 to champion journalists’ causes and independence. The syndicate was dissolved following the 1989 coup and replaced by a state-controlled union, a move that impacted professional membership criteria. Following the December 2018 revolution, journalists reached a consensus to establish a new syndicate; a general assembly was held in March 2022, and the first elections in 33 years took place in August 2022, resulting in the election of Abdelmoniem Abu Idris as head of the syndicate and marking the beginning of a new era of independence.
