Khartoum, 15 April 2026, (News Room) -As the war in Sudan enters its fourth year on April 15, women emerge as the group bearing the heaviest burden of this conflict, shouldering not only the general consequences of war but also compounded hardships that directly affect their lives, bodies, and dignity.
Millions of women in Sudan face daily struggles with hunger, repeated displacement, and violence. They have lost much and live in constant insecurity—whether in their homes, during their flight from violence, or within displacement camps—amid fragile environments that lack even the most basic services. In such conditions, the risks of exploitation and abuse are heightened, particularly in the absence of legal protection, accountability, and with the collapse of state institutions.
Local and international reports confirm a significant rise in women’s needs after three years of war in Sudan. More than 17 million women require humanitarian assistance, including over one million pregnant women. Additionally, 13.6 million women and girls are in need of food support and livelihood assistance. Reports also indicate an increase in sexual violence against women, with rape being used as a tactic of war. Women face attacks while searching for food, and the number of people in need of support among survivors of sexual violence has reached 12.7 million—most of them women and girls—compared to 3.1 million in 2023.
The Sudan Media Forum and its member organizations publish this material, prepared by the Forum’s newsroom, to document in brief the tragedy of Sudanese women over three years of war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces. The material highlights that millions of women are living in daily confrontation with hunger, repeated displacement, and violence. They remain unsafe, whether in their homes, during their displacement journeys, or in camps, in fragile environments that lack the most basic services—where risks of exploitation and violence are high, especially in the absence of legal protection, accountability, and the collapse of state institutions.
