The Sudan Media Forum (SMF) continues to strengthen its institutional structure and develop its governance and implementation mechanisms in response to the expansion of its activities and partnerships, as well as the growing challenges facing independent Sudanese media organizations.
Against the backdrop of a Sudanese media landscape deeply affected by war, displacement, and weakened institutional structures, SMF is working to develop a more responsive and sustainable institutional model for managing its programs, partnerships, and operations.
A key step in this process is the establishment of the SMF Executive Office, designed to provide a dedicated institutional mechanism for coordinating programs and partnerships, supporting administrative follow-up, and advancing the Forum’s organizational development.
This step reflects the evolution of SMF from a space for collaboration and coordination among independent Sudanese media organizations into a platform managing a growing range of activities in media development, digital infrastructure, advocacy, content production, and cooperation with regional and international partners.
Strengthening Governance and Implementation Capacity
The current institutional development process focuses on creating a structure that preserves the collective nature on which the Forum was founded while providing clearer mechanisms for implementation, accountability, and decision-making.
This includes developing the organizational structure, internal workflows, human resources systems, and operational procedures, while clarifying the relationship between governance and oversight roles on the one hand and implementation responsibilities on the other.
The aim is not to replace the Forum’s collective leadership model, but to support it with an institutional structure capable of translating strategic directions and decisions into organized, consistent, and accountable action.
The Executive Office is also benefiting from specialized technical support in human resources and governance to review existing systems and develop arrangements appropriate to the Forum’s current stage of growth.
Institutional Development Built on Experience
This process builds on the practical experience SMF has gained through its programs and partnerships. That experience has demonstrated both the expanding opportunities available to the Forum and the need for stronger internal systems capable of managing multiple initiatives efficiently and sustainably.
SMF therefore views institutional development as an essential part of strengthening its ability to serve its members and contribute to the resilience and independence of Sudanese media.
In the coming period, consultations with the Board and member organizations will continue, with institutional development and governance expected to remain important areas of discussion in the Forum’s upcoming collective meetings.
